    The experience of education: the impacts of high stakes testing on school students and their families

    This study lays bare Australian educator’s perspectives of NAPLAN testing and its unintended effects on schooling and student well-being. The report draws on the experience of over 8,300 teachers and principals across the country, surveyed at the time of the NAPLAN testing in mid-May, 2012. It probes the impact of NAPLAN on testing, pedagogy and curriculum practice as well as the more difficult (and largely ignored) question of the impact on students’ health and well-being. &nbsp

    This article is about entrepreneurship teaching in Vocational Education and Training. It is argued that the Change Laboratory within the framework of Developmental Work Research is an effective and viable approach to entrepreneurship teaching. There are three main reasons for this. First, the agency embedded in the Laboratory triggers the participants’ sense of initiative.Second, the Change Laboratory is an ideal location for implementing the European agenda of introducing entrepreneurship into the vocational curriculum at the local level, thus allowing sustainability. Third, the Laboratory is a space where the individual’s abilities connected to the European competence called “sense of initiative and entrepreneurship” is challenged and enhanced.Questo articolo riguarda l’insegnamento dell’imprenditoria nella Formazione ed Educazione Professionale. Si sostiene che il Change Laboratory compreso nel quadro della Developmental Work Research è un approccio efficace e praticabile all’insegnamento dell’imprenditoria. Tre ragioni sono a sostegno di questa tesi. In primo luogo, l’attività prevista dal laboratorio stimola il senso di iniziativa dei partecipanti. In secondo luogo, il Change Laboratory figura come luogo ideale per l’implementazione dell’agendaeuropea orientata all’introduzione dell’imprenditorialità nei curriculaprofessionali a livello locale, consentendone così l’esercizio sostenibile.Infine, il Laboratorio è uno spazio ove le capacità individuali connesse alla competenza europea denominata “senso di iniziativa e imprenditorialità” sono messe alla prova e migliorate

    Adaptive unsharp masking for contrast enhancement

    Journal ArticleABSTRACT A new scheme o,f unsharp masking for image contrast enhancement is presented in this paper. An adaptive algorithm is introduced so that a sharpening action is performed only in locations where the image exhibits significant dynamics. Hence, the amplification of noise in smooth areas is reduced. An adaptive directional filtering is also performed so as to provide suitable emphasis to the different directional characteristics of the detail. Because it is capable of treating high-detail and medium-detail areas differently, this algorithm also avoids unpleasant overshoot artifacts in regions of sharp transitions. Experimental results demonstrating the usefulness of the adaptive operator in an application involving preprocessing of images for enhancement prior to zooming are also included in the paper

    Deferring a university offer in rural Australia

    Atrend of increasing regional disadvantage is suggested in the pattern of rising rates of deferral of university places amongst rural schoolcompleters in Australia. Cost-related factors and financial barriers are prominent in the reasons given by these young people for deferring a place at university. These trends formed the impetus for a study of the destinations of rural school-completers in the Australian state of Victoria, the findings of which are reported in this article. The issue of theoretical and practical interest that this article examines is whether this phenomenon of deferral constitutes a disadvantage for these young people. Are these deferrers ‘lost’ to the system? Do they eventually take up their places? Are some groups less likely to take them up than others? What happens to the rest? Of particular interest is the question regarding what barriers might prevent some groups from taking up their place. And finally, what is the experience of those who enter university? Do they continue and thrive in their studies? This article considers these questions in the context of data outlining the destinations of non-metropolitan deferrers in their second year out of school

    Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Melbourne, 1987This study is an analysis of educational provision in the Richmond/Coilingwood area for young people aged 16 to 24 years of age, of migrant or refugee background, who have a history of minimal or interrupted schooling. These students are mostly of Indo-Chinese or Timorese background , and face severe problems relating to their lack of literacy and poor English proficiency. Many of these students are unaccompanied refugees and face economic hardship in Australia. Educational programs running in five postprimary schools, two TAFE colleges and two language centres are examined in light of their relevance to the needs of these students. It emerges from this study that a small number of institutions provide responsive quality programs for this group. There are, however, general problems relating to the low status and marginalization of ESL programs in most of the institutions. These problems are compounded by a lack of funding, unsympathetic administration, ignorance of the issues and difficulties relating to accreditation. In some institutions, no provision at all is made for these students. Needs emerging from these issues may be summarized as follows. A greater awareness of the educational requirements. of this group must be developed. An informed collaborative approach must be adopted to respond to these needs in the form of appropriate ESL programs. Policy and administrative support must be forthcoming to assist in achieving these goals

    Strategies for Structural Youth Unemployment : a Capability Approach for Guidance

    The aim of this article is to present an innovative approach for guidance. The article starts by introducing the structural reason of unemployment in Italy. It presents the Australian model of guidance and the new reforms on guidance which are being introduced in Italy. It then describes a Change Laboratory intervention carried in a vocational setting in Australia in 2012, which is proposed as model of guidance based on the capability approach. The different stakeholders actively participate in the process thus creating a formative characterization of guidance based on agency. This creates new capabilities for students on the possible career paths they want to undertake. Through this process of informed public dialogue, the students are given voice and contribute to shape the development of the personal life project into further education or work, and this process is led by their values and the values of their communities.Peer reviewe
